There's no denying Flash sites can look just that! But there are downsides, not least that they often require similar timescales to a Disney epic! On a more practical level Flash is not the friend of search engines so we've rarely employed Flash in our sites.
We start from a different position; what is the right level and tone of visual techniques for your site?
Our website team are adept in the use of JavaScript to empower websites and really improve usability. We do a lot of work using the very popular jQuery framework which helps us create very complex features in a relateively short amount of time. The likes of Google, Microsoft and the BBC also use jQuery so we're in very good company here!
As an example the product 'slider' at the top of our homepage is produced with JavaScript and iQuery. Until recently this would have been the preserve of Flash but these and similar effects are comparatively quick to produce, are compatible with just about every browser, are fully accessible, and can be read by search engines.
JavaScript is also used for dropdown menus, unobtusive popups (modal windows) and image fading effects. JavaScript is also the gateway to AJAX, which is discussed here.
